NYU in Madrid
The MA program is housed in the NYU in Madrid campus in El Viso, a residential area of Madrid close to the business center of the city and the Real Madrid soccer stadium. Most classes are held on this modern campus, which also houses the administration, computer facilities and a small reference library.
Instituto Internacional
Classes are also held at the Instituto Internacional a historic center of US hispanism and women’s education in Spain. All MA students become members of the Institute’s excellent library. The Institute’s rich, specialist open-access collections of books, journals and audiovisual materials, its wi-fi connection, and the quiet peaceful atmosphere make this a perfect place to study.
Research and cultural resources
Students also have access to some of the richest libraries, archives and museums in the world. The Biblioteca Nacional de España the Biblioteca Hispánica housed in the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo, and the Filmoteca Española and a host of other libraries and collections provide students with the resources they need to complete their coursework and MA projects.
Madrid life
One of the program’s great strengths is its location in Madrid, a young, ethnically-diverse, and culturally vibrant city, home to growing Latin American communities and a focal point of the meeting of the Iberian and Latin American worlds. Students are encouraged to explore and immerse themselves linguistically and culturally in Madrid life. They receive news of events, restaurants and places of interest, and suggestions to help them make the city their own.
At the beginning of the year, all students are given an Annual Museum Pass which gives them free unlimited access to 17 of the top museums in Spain, including the Prado and the Reina Sofía.
Housing
Students may choose from different housing options, from living with a Spanish family, renting a studio apartment, or sharing an apartment with Spaniards or other foreign students or young professionals.
NYU in Madrid only arranges housing with Spanish families or the rental of individual studio apartments. Students seeking shared apartment accommodation are provided with a list of useful websites and guidance on how to choose a suitable apartment and area, but must find and arrange this type of accommodation for themselves.
Students are encouraged to take this option, as shared accommodation provides the greatest possibilities for linguistic, cultural and social integration in the city. Sharing an apartment is also the cheapest option, as Madrid has a relatively large supply of reasonably priced housing.
Students who opt to find their own housing are advised to arrive in Madrid in mid-August in order to find and settle into accommodation before the Orientation program begins at the end of the month.
